SADDAM HUSSIEN RECEIVES POST-MORTUM AWARDS ON IRAQI TELEVISION YESTERDAY By IR Staff July 20, 2003 Saddam Hussien appeared on a pirate television signal yesterday to recieve his post-mortum awards yesterday, saying he didn't want to wait until his death to recieve them. His approximately 75 awards was shown supposively live on TV on a pirate, or unauthorized (read: not U. S.), television signal. He showed a Friday evening newspaper from Bagdad to show he was still alive and healthy. His location wasn't known for sure, but is suspected to be just outside Bagdad, judging by the density of houses and plenty of plants. CIA officials are still working on the tape, broadcast later on the Arab-region satellite station Al-Jezera, to identify if the person on it is really Saddam. Hussien recieved many metals and plaques to commemerate his "service" to Iraq. He was awarded for everything from longevity to "masterful wartime tactics" for setting Kuwait's oil fields on fire. Overall, the ceremony lasted over three hours, with Hussien's acceptance speech last one and one-half hours, followed by a message to Iraq's people to rise up against their "captors," even suggesting ways to fight. He also claimed to be leading the resistance and was in touch with fighters and their leaders. As for why he chose to recieve his awards that are typically left until after someone dies, he said he couldn't wait. He said that these awards meant a lot to him and he wanted to be present and enjoy the awards while he was living. Bush, in his weekly radio address yesterday, said he was "only slightly surprised" that Saddam would do this, noting that Saddam is a "notoriously vain person," and has a history of making up awards just to recieve them. He did say though that it was unprecidented and extremely unusual for one to do this, saying that Saddam has taken vanity to a whole new level. He also stated that while not entirely under control, Iraq is becoming safer by the day.
