For my COM 114 class, I needed to do a psuedo-impromptu speech. We knew what the topic was supposed to be and we could prepate for it, but it was supposed to be in the spirit of impromptu speeches. Who knows what that means but anyway we had to do a short speech on ourselves, no more than 90 seconds. So, naturally, I wasn't too happy about doing another stupid speech for this boring class, so I thought, how could I possibly convey my deep dislike for crummy little speeches, while keeping it subtle. I came up with two: 1.) Draw up the speech inbetween my classes, thinking about it as little as possible, and 2) Say the most obnoxious thing I could come up with in the first statement. No. 2 was obviously easy for me.

What follows is the approximately the content in the speech I gave.

I'm sure all of you are wondering how you were lucky enough to go the the same college as me. Well, I'm here to tell you exactly how I came to Purdue.

It all started with the PSATs, where you check the box to receive information from various colleges. A short while later, I had way too much mail from colleges hoping that they'd be the lucky one to get me.

However, many of these colleges had cruel and unusual requirements involved in the application process. You know what I'm talking about, essays and writing samples. Who really cares what sort of landscape I would walk the tightrope over, or how does knowing what one extreme sport I would participate in help others know that I will make their college look good?

However, the magic day came when I got my Purdue application. Absolutely no writing sample or essay was needed. I raced through that application and sent it on its way about two months after I got it, and I was soon accepted. [Full disclosure: My mom got upset with me saying this, she actually filled the thing out, and while we're on the subject of truth, it took her about four months. She obviously has trouble reading the title line of the teacher's banned site, but not my essay-thingies.]

So there you have it. A combination of luck laziness, and Purdue's intelligence brings me to you today.

So, yeah, I know that I didn't actually cover the actual process of coming here, it was more like the application process, but the TA was laughing hard enough that she really didn't pay attention. So, I learned that distracting the teacher so that she isn't paying too much attention to the actual assignment is a great way to a better grade. Yelling "Look, a distraction!" in ENGR 116 hasn't helped much yet though. Guess some one else has already tried that.
